Read and Write
All successful writers I know are also avid readers. When you read, you learn more about language, how it’s used, when it works, or doesn’t. You also gain valuable vocabulary that you might use to take your own writing up a notch.
May I recommend these titles for summer reading? Some are new and others just as good today as when they were published:
Sanctuary Line, Jane Urquhart, an older book but in her typical reflective and poetic style
Still Alice, Lisa Genova
The Gift of an Elephant, Jacquie Gauthier
The Silence of Bones, June Hur
I’ll be the One, Lyla Lee
Meet Me at the Museum, Anne Youngson
For Children
Encourage children with the love of books. Read to them. Titles to consider:
The Boat that Ben Built, Jen Lyn Bailey
Sing in the Spring, Sheree Fitch
When We Are Kind, Monique Gray Smith
A Stopwatch from Grampa, Loretta Garbutt
For children who mostly read by themselves:
Beatrice and Croc Harry, Lawrence Hill
Birdspell, Valerie Sherrard Anything by this award-winning author is a good choice, especially if you write for the market.
Stand on the Sky, Erin Bow, Governor General Book winner
Keep the Light Burning, Cori Mordaunt
The Total Tragedy of a Girl Named Hamlet, Erin Dionne
The Lost Language, Claudia Mills
Do you have titles to recommend to other readers? Reply to this newsletter and I will share a selection in the July issue of Finetuned.
Remember, magazine reading counts too. Ask a librarian. They can help you find a book.
Thank you to fellow writers in my critique group for book titles. More for me to explore as well.
