For this season of busyness and the holy, I wish you the best – good health, warm shelter, people around you who care about you, food to nourish you. Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays or whatever your tradition may be.

For some, there may be an empty place at the table at holiday gatherings, as there will be for my family following the death of my mother. We’ve had her with us a good number of years, and we’re never ready to say goodbye. As we grieve that loss, we also give thanks for the years and good memories she gave us.

Take time to share the stories that gladden your heart and give thanks for the love and good memories. Since you’re a writer, write those memories, as you’re able. Record them in some way to share with the next generation and add photos where you can. Perhaps you’ll create a video or slide show of photos that you can share afterwards, a legacy to those you love and care about.

Write, too, about those things that worry or concern you. This may not be a public declaration, but just for yourself. Often it helps in sorting out feelings. If journaling is what you do, keep it up during these winter solstice days. And find something that brings you peace and joy.

If you’re a person of faith, take time to give thanks for God’s love that sees you through dark days and who celebrates with you in good times too, giving his best gift, his son and Redeemer.
